Welcome to our website...

This is the website of the British Tenpin Bowling Association sanctioned Sunday Leisure Tenpin Bowling League, who have been bowling at the Charrington Bowl in Tolworth, Surrey, since the seventies, not that long after the centre first opened.

Charrington Bowl is a 32 lane bowling centre in Kingston Road at the junction with the A3, which was opened on the 21st June 1965 by the late Hattie Jacques, the screen and TV Star.

The bowl was a joint venture between Excel Bowling and Bass Charrington. The original name of Excel Bowl was changed in 1974 when Charrington & Co. took over Excel Bowling. The bowl then became a subsidiary of the Brewery Group and the name altered to Charrington Bowl.

Throughout its history the centre has enjoyed the busiest league programme (both at junior and senior level) in the UK, and quite likely Europe as well. The person responsible for this was the very popular centre manager, Jean Ferguson. Jean has retired now, but nevertheless she will always be the first lady of Charrington Bowl. Her dedication and expertise in helping many people learn to bowl over the years is one of the reasons that Charrington Bowl enjoys the success that it does today.

The centre has been the venue for some of the top National and International Tournaments, and has attracted bowlers from every corner of the globe. On the International front, Charrington Bowl has hosted the Triple Crown Tournament and two of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the 8th FIQ World Championships in 1975 and the 13th International Bowling World Cup in 1977. On the home front the bowl has hosted the British Tenpin Bowling Association National Championships, the NAYBC Championships, the Police Championships, the Army, the RAF, British Airways, Barclays Bank, the Premier Tenpin Bowling Club Masters and many other challenge matches.

Charrington Bowl is now part of the Hollywood Bowl group, which is a division of Mitchells and Butlers Retail Limited. Mitchells & Butlers run many of Britain's leading licensed retail brands including Vintage Inns, Ember Inns, Toby Carvery, O'Neill's, All Bar One and Scream, as well as some of the most famous pubs in Britain. The service, standards and experience are those you would expect of any Hollywood Bowl, but due to its bowling history the character of Charrington Bowl remains distinctly unique.

The Sunday Leisure Tenpin Bowling League's very first League Secretary was Dave Emery. Dave was sports editor of the Surrey Comet newspaper, who went on to write for the national papers covering football for the likes of the Daily Mirror and others. Today we still have bowling in our league one bowler, Geoff Clapson, who will remember Dave Emery. Amazingly Geoff has bowled in the Sunday Leisure league since its inception some thirty years ago.
